چکیده

Studies relating the populational structure of target species to operational and environmental variables contribute directly management fisheries in these resources. Therefore, this study aimed provide data on fishing ecology swordfish ( Xiphias gladius) caught by Brazilian longline fleet operating western Atlantic between 2010 2016. Generalized additive mixed models were used evaluate relationship explanatory responses based Catch Per Unit Effort (CPUE) data. Results show that catches mostly latitudes 5°N 30°S longitudes 20° 50°W prefers temperatures under 25°C at depths below 60 meters. The showed a tendency toward intermediate light intensity, predominating crescent moon phase, preference for areas with low chlorophyll concentrations. Our findings interactions CPUE suggest times can be fleets government institutions as starting point strategies.

An oceanographic characterization of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) longline fishing grounds in the springtime subtropical North Pacific

During January–May, surface manifestation of multiple, individual basin-scale fronts accentuate the central North Pacific Subtropical Frontal Zone (STFZ) system. The most prominent of these fronts are climatologically located at 32 )34 N and at 28 )30 N latitudes [herein nominally referred to as the ‘Subtropical Front’ (STF) and the ‘South Subtropical Front’ (SSTF), respectively], although cons...

First report of a swordfish (Xiphias gladius Linnaeus, 1758) beneath open-sea farming cages in the Western Mediterranean Sea

An adult swordfish (Xiphias gladius L.) was reported for the first time at coastal Mediterranean fish-farm facilities. This record highlights the necessity to assess the potential ecological changes to wild fish assemblages caused by coastal farming activity, especially to this type of endangered large migratory fish predator, which could be taken into account in future management strategies.

Cephalopods in the Diet of Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) Caught off the West Coast of Baja California, Mexico

The lower beaks of 1,318 cephalopods from the stomach contents of 175 swordfish, Xiphias gladius, caught off the west coast of Baja California, Mexico, between 1988 and 1996 were analyzed. In total, 20 species of teuthoids, 4 octopods, and one vampyromorph were identified. Weights and lengths of cephalopods were estimated from the lower rostral lengths. Ommastrephid squids, primarily jumbo squi...

Evidence of a high percentage of intersex in the Mediterranean swordfish (Xiphias gladius L.).

The first evidence of the presence of intersexuality in a wild population of Mediterranean swordfish (Xiphias gladius L.) is reported. Forty of 162 specimens (25%) macroscopically classified as males, showed the presence of female germ cells within the testes. In two specimens grouped previtellogenic oocytes were present; all the other specimens possessed single scattered previtellogenic oocyte...
